Frequently Asked Questions
Is DragonSword: Awakening a gacha game?+
No. DragonSword: Awakening was originally a Korean mobile gacha game, but Hound13 completely rebuilt it as a buy-to-play PC game. All 19 heroes are included in the $29.99 purchase. There are no gacha pulls or pay-to-win mechanics. Only cosmetic Familiar DLC is available.
Who are the best heroes in DragonSword: Awakening?+
S-tier heroes include Lute (Knockdown DPS), Aria (Shock Support), Castella (Airborne CC), and Dana (Freeze Tank). These heroes offer the best Status Ailment coverage and combo potential. Check our full Tier List for detailed rankings.
How does the tag combo system work?+
The tag combo system lets you switch between 3 heroes in real-time during combat. Each hero applies a Status Ailment (Knockdown, Shock, Freeze, Airborne, or Bleed). When ailments stack, they trigger Signal Skills and Switching Signals for bonus damage. Combining different ailments across heroes creates powerful chain combos.
Are DLC Familiars stronger than free ones?+
No. According to official sources, there is no functional difference between free and DLC Familiars. The 20 free Familiars obtained through story and exploration provide the same combat and exploration bonuses as the 10 DLC Familiars.
What DLC content is available?+
DLC consists entirely of Familiar cosmetics — 10 Familiars available as DLC with no functional advantage over free Familiars. All 19 heroes and core gameplay content are included in the base $29.99 purchase. Post-launch hero updates (Liza, Jerome, Veronica, Logan) will be free.
What is the pricing model?+
DragonSword: Awakening is buy-to-play at $29.99. There is no gacha, no pay-to-win, and no subscription. All 19 heroes are included. Only cosmetic Familiar DLC is available for purchase. Purchase before August 31, 2026 to receive the free Abyssal Direwolf Familiar bonus.
What is the Webzen legal dispute about?+
Hound13 had a contract dispute with former publisher Webzen regarding the original Korean mobile version. The dispute is still in legal proceedings but does not affect the PC release of DragonSword: Awakening. Hound13 is now self-publishing the PC version.
How many heroes are in the game?+
There are 19 playable heroes at launch, with 4 additional heroes (Liza, Jerome, Veronica, Logan) planned for post-launch updates as free additions. All heroes are included in the base purchase — no unlocking or gacha required.
What are Signal Skills and Switching Signals?+
Signal Skills are powerful bonus attacks triggered when Status Ailments stack during tag combos. Switching Signals are special attacks triggered when you switch heroes at the right moment during a combo chain. Together, they form the core damage-dealing mechanic of the tag combo system.
What is the Rift System?+
The Rift System is a planned endgame content feature coming in post-launch updates. Details are limited, but it is expected to provide challenging repeatable content for max-level heroes. Check our Updates page for the latest roadmap information.
